Former President Muhammadu Buhari Dies in London at 82

ABUJA, NIGERIA – Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has passed away in London at the age of 82. His death, which occurred on Sunday, July 13, 2025, was announced by his former spokesperson, Garba Shehu.

In a statement, Shehu said, “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaehi Roojihun. The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”

The cause of death has not yet been publicly disclosed.

Buhari, a retired major general in the Nigerian Army, served as the nation’s military head of state from 1983 to 1985. He later returned to power as a democratically elected president, serving two terms from 2015 to 2023.

His presidency was marked by a focus on combating corruption, addressing national security challenges, and attempting to diversify Nigeria’s oil-dependent economy. However, his tenure also faced criticism for its handling of the economy and persistent insecurity in various parts of the country.
