Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has resigned his membership of the party.
Atiku’s resignation comes as he prepares for the 2027 elections and confirms his role in forming a new coalition party, the Alliance Democratic Congress.
The former Vice President communicated his decision in a letter dated Monday, July 14, 2025, addressed to the chairman of the PDP in Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area, Adamawa State. His Special Assistant on Media, Abdul Rasheeth, shared a copy of the letter on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday.
In the letter, Atiku wrote: “I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect. I would like to take this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the opportunities I have been given by the party. Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life. As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision.”
He explained that his departure was due to the party’s current direction, which he believes no longer aligns with its original founding principles. “It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognising the irreconcilable differences that have emerged,” he said.
Atiku concluded by wishing the PDP and its leadership well, thanking them for their support and the opportunities he enjoyed during his long political journey with the party.
