As the ancient city of Ibadan mourns the passing of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the traditional succession system of the Olubadan throne prepares to usher in a new era under the leadership of Oba (Senator) Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, a distinguished figure in Ibadan’s political and cultural landscape.

Oba Rashidi Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo State and a respected elder statesman, is set to ascend the revered throne of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, in accordance with the long-standing rotational succession system rooted in seniority and tradition. His anticipated coronation signals not only continuity but also a significant moment in the history of Ibadan—Africa’s largest indigenous city.

A direct member of the Olubadan chieftaincy line, Ladoja has for years risen through the traditional hierarchy, from the lowest rung of the Ibadan traditional council up to the Otun Olubadan title, which places him next in line after the late Oba Olakulehin.

Beyond his royal credentials, Oba Ladoja is renowned for his public service. He served as the Governor of Oyo State from 2003 to 2007, where his administration was widely praised for its commitment to education, urban development, and fiscal transparency. His blend of royal heritage and political experience is expected to bring a unique perspective to the throne.

Oba Ladoja is known for his intellect, humility, and dedication to the development of Ibadanland. His expected coronation comes at a time when traditional rulers are playing increasingly prominent roles in community development, peacebuilding, and cultural preservation.

His leadership is expected to reinforce Ibadan’s strategic role in Oyo State and Nigeria at large, especially in cultural tourism, conflict resolution, and grassroots development.

As a respected elder and bridge-builder, Ladoja is also likely to champion reforms that harmonize traditional governance with the demands of a modern and rapidly evolving society.

Though the official coronation date is yet to be announced, preparations are already underway within the Ibadan traditional council and across the city. Many citizens and royal watchers have expressed optimism that Oba Rashidi Ladoja will bring wisdom, dignity, and renewed purpose to the throne.

For many, his ascension is seen not just as a traditional rite of passage, but a historic moment for Ibadan to reaffirm its values of honor, unity, and progressive leadership.

As Ibadan transitions into a new era, all eyes now turn to Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja—the next Olubadan of Ibadanland.
